Custom Furniture from Connecticut
One example is board width. Although they are hard to find today, I love working with wide boards. When using wide boards, the inherent grain patterns are emphasized, and the natural beauty of the wood can be appreciated. Today, most furniture is made up of narrow scraps that have been glued. Consequently, grain patterns are cut off and glued together, resulting in repeated seams under which all uniqueness is lost.
I flatten these boards by hand using hand planes, creating a beautiful finish that cannot be outdone by machines. I use classical joinery, such as hand-dovetails and mortise-and-tenons, to exhibit the natural strength of the wood. The mass produced furniture of today does not exhibit such strength. My custom pieces are unique, strong, and beautiful.
I work closely with my customers in designing each piece to build the best furniture possible. I keep in mind wood choice and furniture style so that I can create the best piece to flow with your room, while being comfortable, well-proportioned, and functional. I find so much joy in making each piece of furniture, but I get even more joy in seeing people sit on a chair, or at a table, I have made and watching their faces light up in excitement to bring it home. I believe that when a customer invests in one of my pieces, they will get exactly what they want.
